Earth is not the same as we know it today. The world governing body that we know today as the United Nations has long disappeared, eradicated seemingly over night much to the dismay of many people. Such an entity that was initially handed the burden of settling disputes among other issues had grown so corrupt and yet so weak that it collapsed in itself.
